The BioChromato Smart Evaporator C10 has been a game changer for implementing Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs) in our chemistry courses here at Santa Monica College.
With the ability to load ten 20 mL sample vials simultaneously (filled about halfway with solvent), we can readily evaporate off ethyl acetate and hexanes in about 10–15 minutes at 40 °C, meaning the students can get more research done in a four hour lab period.
In the classroom lab setting, time is so limited, and the ability to evaporate solvent quickly and in parallel means students don’t have to hit a stopping point when they reach a step where they need solvent to evaporate.
The aluminum heating block provided by BioChromato fits our 20 mL sample vials perfectly, and being able to have students hop on and off the device makes it incredibly efficient to use. Students operate the device themselves during class, lifting and lowering the heating block stage to add and remove their samples as needed.
This device is much more convenient to use than a rotovap for our small-scale application.
