Analysis of PET Bottles Dedicated to Hot Drinks
Purpose
The differences in the layers of a multi-layered PET bottles for hot drinks were measured by ChemZo and processed the data by Spectra Scope software.
Methods
Ion Source | ChemZo (BioChromato) |
Mass Spectrometer | compact QTOF (Bruker) |
Measurement Method | The inner, middle, and outer layers (0.6 mg each) of the hot PET bottles were cut and subjected to mass spectrometry measurements while heating up to 600°C. |
Data Processing | Two analysis methods of Spectra Scope were utilized. 1.Polymer Engine (KMD analysis) 2.IDS (Differential analysis) |
Results
TIC at the time of measurement is shown in Fig.1. Additive-derived peaks were observed at 3-4min (300-400°C), and pyrolysates of PET were observed at 4-5min (400-500°C). Polymer Engine results showed that the inner and outer layers had a repeating structure due to PET pyrolysates, while the middle layer did not. (Fig.2) Differential analysis by IDS revealed several compounds that are contained only in the middle layer. Among them, the most intense one at m/z=247.1457, which was assigned to be C14H18N2O2 by compositional analysis. (Fig.3)
